Arbeloa Takes Responsibility for Real Madrids Loss to Benfica

Dramatic 4-2 Defeat Ensures Both Teams Reach the Champions League Round of 16

The unexpected loss of 4-2 means both clubs will be participating in the upcoming Champions League round of 16 playoffs.

Arbeloa’s Post-Match Reflection

After the game, Arbeloa expressed his disappointment: “Clearly, we were not at the level we aimed for, considering the challenging nature of the match, the strength of our opponents, the atmosphere, and the stakes involved for both sides. I don’t believe we maintained the required intensity throughout the entire 90 minutes.”

On the Surprise Goal by Benfica’s Goalkeeper

Regarding Benfica’s goalkeeper, Anatoliy Trubin, who scored to extend the host’s lead to 4-2, Arbeloa stated: “This isn’t the first occasion a goalkeeper has netted a goal against me. They had to take risks; we were down two players and needed a goal to secure our place in the top eight. Both sides took gambles, and ultimately, they emerged victorious.”

Interaction with Coach Jose Mourinho

Reflecting on his encounter with Benfica’s coach, Jose Mourinho, after the match, Arbeloa appreciated the sentiments expressed by the Portuguese manager.

“I was not caught off guard. I mentioned yesterday in this press room and in different interviews that the game’s demands were going to be significant. I fully understood the quality of the opposition, the charged atmosphere, and the caliber of the coach we were facing.”

Taking Responsibility

“I conveyed my thoughts to the players, yet I struggled to effectively communicate my expectations for their performance on the field. When a team fails to meet the level we showed previously, for instance, in Villarreal, the blame lies squarely with me as I didn’t manage to prepare the team to approach the game as intended. The accountability rests solely with me and José.”

He continued, “I take full responsibility for this defeat, just as I did in Albacete. If you attended those two press conferences, you would know that I have stated this repeatedly: I feel entirely responsible when results do not go in our favor and we fall short of our goals.”

“However, this is not the end of our Champions League journey. We have two more matches ahead, with the aim of advancing to the next round, and we are determined to tackle that challenge.”
