Antony Reveals Close Call with Liverpool Before Joining Manchester United

Manchester United’s Antony has disclosed that he nearly joined Liverpool prior to committing to The Red Devils.

In September 2022, Antony transferred to Manchester United from Ajax for a reported fee of £86 million. During his tenure, he often found himself criticized for the club’s underwhelming performances under then-coach Erik ten Hag.

The 25-year-old was sidelined by manager Ruben Amorim and placed in the “bomb squad” this summer as the Portuguese coach aimed to clear out underperforming players. Meanwhile, many of those discarded have thrived elsewhere.

Antony logged 96 appearances for Manchester United, contributing just 12 goals and 5 assists over three seasons at the club. His time at Old Trafford is often viewed as disappointing. However, he has since rejuvenated his career at Real Betis, netting 10 goals and providing 6 assists in just 30 matches.

In a recent interview, Antony opened up about his near-miss with Liverpool, a decision that could have led his career down a different path.

“Currently, I feel like a better man and a father. Before my move to United, I was on the verge of joining Liverpool. Everything happens for a reason, and while I experienced tough times, I also celebrated victories and enjoyed memorable moments.”

Antony reflected on his journey, acknowledging the challenges that had impacted his performance.

“I take responsibility for the fact that things didn’t go as planned. I understand my potential and talents; my participation in a World Cup shows that.”

He emphasized a positive outlook, stating that the challenges he faced during his time at United shaped him.

“Though I had the chance to join Liverpool and perhaps lift titles there, what’s done is done. I will now focus on making an impact in La Liga and helping Betis secure European football.”
