Ange Postecoglou Dismissed by Nottingham Forest as Roberto Mancini and Sean Dyche Emerge as Potential Successors

Postecoglou Loses Job After Disappointing Streak
Ange Postecoglou, the recently appointed head coach of Nottingham Forest, has been dismissed just 17 minutes post a 3-0 defeat against Chelsea at the City Ground on Saturday. This swift action marks the shortest tenure for any permanent manager in Premier League history, as Postecoglou lasted only 39 days after taking the role on September 9.
Postecoglou’s record includes eight matches without a victory, accounting for six losses and two draws across all competitions. His leadership saw Forest earning a mere single point from five Premier League encounters, leaving the team just above the relegation zone in 17th place at the time of his firing.
A statement from Nottingham Forest read, “The club can confirm that due to a series of unsatisfactory results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach, effective immediately.” Additional remarks will not be forthcoming from the club.
Postecoglou’s coaching team, featuring names such as Nick Montgomery, Mile Jedinak, and Sergio Raimundo, is also expected to depart alongside him.
Club owner Evangelos Marinakis was present during the Chelsea match but left his seat before full-time. He did not personally inform Postecoglou of the decision; rather, it was a senior club official who delivered the news. Postecoglou subsequently expressed his apologies to the players for not being able to accomplish his goals.
Who Will Take Over at Forest?
With Postecoglou’s exit, Nottingham Forest is once again in search of a new manager, marking the third change this season. Nuno Espirito Santo was dismissed after just three matches earlier in the campaign. Initial discussions have occurred with former Everton manager Sean Dyche regarding a potential replacement, while ex-Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is also a candidate.
Dyche has been out of work since January, while Mancini recently managed Saudi Arabia’s national team. Mancini’s prior experience in the Premier League includes leading Manchester City to a league title in 2012. Conversations with Dyche have taken place, although no decision has been made yet. There is considerable backing within the club for Marco Silva, currently at Fulham, though his high release clause could complicate matters.
Both Dyche and Mancini are available for hire and do not present any release fee obstacles.
A Record-Setting Short Tenure
Postecoglou’s time in charge has set a record for the shortest period any permanent manager has overseen in the Premier League. He surpasses Les Reed’s previous record of 40 days with Charlton Athletic in 2006, where he managed to win just one of eight games.
In stark contrast, former Crystal Palace manager Frank De Boer holds the record for the fewest matches managed by any permanent appointment, overseeing four games. Postecoglou led Nottingham Forest in five Premier League matches before his dismissal.
The 60-year-old learned of his firing shortly after addressing his players in the locker room following the Chelsea match. Defender Ryan Yates recounted his experience, revealing that he had stepped out for a run after the post-match discussion, only to return and find out the news.
Analysis: The Unprecedented Quick Change
BBC Radio 5 Live reporter Lee Blakeman commented on the atypical nature of Postecoglou’s swift dismissal, sharing that such a rapid exit is unprecedented in his 15 years of covering football. He noted the chaotic scene as the news broke while he awaited interviews in the tunnel, with media representatives expressing concern and confusion in the aftermath.
Responsibility for the Outcome
Former England captain Alan Shearer emphasized the importance of accountability, suggesting that while Postecoglou’s results did not meet expectations, club owner Marinakis must also shoulder some responsibility for the managerial changes. Critics noted that the transition from Nuno Espirito Santo’s style to Postecoglou’s proved too abrupt.
Shearer remarked on the stark contrast in managerial philosophy, questioning the wisdom behind appointing a coach who advocates for a contrasting playing style within such a short timeframe. Micah Richards, a former Manchester City player, also opined that more time should have been afforded to Postecoglou to adapt and implement his strategies.
Reflecting on Postecoglou’s Tenure
Upon his arrival, Nottingham Forest were well-positioned at 10th in the Premier League, on the brink of continental competition for the first time in decades. However, the new appointment swiftly turned sour with a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in Postecoglou’s first match followed by an early exit from the Carabao Cup.
The growing discontent among supporters compounded after a series of poor performances, culminating in a 2-0 loss to Newcastle and finally the 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea, leading to Postecoglou’s premature exit. This has now marked two sacking events for him within a five-month span in the Premier League.
