Almeyda Criticizes Real Betis for Provocation After Plastic Bottle Incident
Sevilla Match Halted Due to Crowd Incident
During a recent home loss for Sevilla, the match was interrupted as projectiles were thrown from the stands.
Comments from Almeyda Before Copa del Rey Match Against Extremadura
Almeyda addressed the incident, stating, “When negative actions occur, it’s unwelcome to everyone, but we must understand the reasons behind it. Fans deserve respect. If you secure a victory, it’s important to remain modest and walk away without inciting further tension.”
He added, “It’s important not to provoke anyone. While what was thrown was plastic, the quantity matters—one or two instances, for example.”
Reflections on the Incident
Almeyda elaborated, “If this were a South American match, the event would have been halted. We were engaged in a derby; there were provocations that triggered a response. I don’t condone either the provocations or the reactions, but it’s a part of football. Although I personally wasn’t harmed, one must get accustomed to various circumstances. A plastic bottle isn’t as significant, yet it’s still inappropriate.”
He questioned, “Why are fans often targeted? It’s easier to go after those who can’t protect themselves. The frustration stemmed from losing the derby, a sentiment I understand, given my past experiences as well.”
Understanding Fan Frustration
Almeyda acknowledged the fanbase’s discontent, explaining, “It’s reasonable for supporters to demand excellence as they’re accustomed to the team achieving significant victories. Their frustration arises from the current performance levels, but the team is evolving, and improvement requires time.”
He concluded, “We all need to push ourselves. I hear that around four thousand fans plan to attend the next match, and they will express both criticism and support. This reflects the reality of a dedicated fanbase that finds it challenging to cope during difficult periods.”
