Grimaldo Confident of Recovery Following Match Injury

Early Exit Due to Collision

During Saturday’s Bundesliga match against Union Berlin, Alejandro Grimaldo was taken off the field on a stretcher shortly before halftime. However, the Bayer Leverkusen player was seen walking and interacting in the mixed zone shortly after the game, expressing optimism about his condition and his availability for the upcoming Spain international fixtures in October.

Details of the Incident

Grimaldo suffered a facial injury after a collision with his teammate Christiane Kofane in the 45th minute, appearing disoriented for a brief period. Leverkusen’s head coach, Kasper Hjulmand, did not arrange for a quick substitution for Grimaldo, allowing him to remain on the field during the nine minutes of added time without a replacement.

Official Substitution

It was only at the beginning of the second half that Grimaldo was officially substituted. Malik Tillman, a teammate, mentioned to Sky Germany after the match that Hjulmand chose to have Grimaldo assessed more thoroughly in the locker room before making the substitution.

Player Insights

“Grimaldo was eager to continue playing,” Tillman recounted to Sky after the match. “But the coach opted for caution.”

In the mixed zone, Grimaldo himself reassured fans, stating, “Everything is fine. It’s just a cut.”
