Alan Shearer Criticizes Manchester United for Excessive Spending on Underperforming Sesko
Alan Shearer’s Critique of Manchester United’s Benjamin Sesko Investment
High Price Tag for New Striker
Manchester United reached an agreement with RB Leipzig to secure striker Benjamin Sesko, investing £74 million during the summer transfer window. This acquisition came as a response to the outcry from fans for a forward after the exit of Rasmus Hojlund and a failed attempt to sign Joshua Zirkzee.
Concerns Over Performance
Despite the hefty price, Sesko’s performance has not met expectations, as he has managed to net only two goals in 12 games for the club. This lack of productivity has led to criticisms, with many beginning to label the 22-year-old as a disappointing signing.
Shearer’s Take on the Situation
In a conversation with Betfair, Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time top scorer with 260 goals, voiced his concerns regarding the investment in Sesko. He stated:
“One player that must do better for United is Benjamin Sesko. They paid over £70 million for him. That was a lot of money; I understand it’s the market, but it was excessive. His start has been challenging, and I don’t expect significant improvements from him, to be honest.”
“While I believe he possesses talent, I question whether he is more than that. He ought to have scored a few more goals by now. His beginning has been difficult, especially given the investment made by United.”
Limited Scoring Opportunities
So far, Sesko has found the back of the net two times in league play, with most of his appearances coming off the substitute bench. He made his debut against Manchester City in September, scoring his first goal against Brentford, but has since struggled to fulfill the high expectations set upon him.
Future Outlook and Injury Update
Coach Amorim is scheduled to provide an update on Sesko’s condition later this week, particularly after he sustained a knee injury during a match against Tottenham. He will address the press before Manchester United resumes their Premier League campaign against Everton.
The United manager has expressed a sense of calm regarding Sesko’s initial phase at the club, indicating that he perceives more potential in the young striker than he initially anticipated, maintaining his faith in the player.
