Al-Merrikh SC will compete in both the Sudanese and Libyan leagues next season, a rare move set to boost the club’s growth and regional football ties.

Sudanese giants Al-Merrikh SC will make history next season after receiving approval to compete in the 2025–2026 Libyan Premier League while still playing in the Sudanese top flight.

The Sudanese Football Association (SFA) confirmed the decision in an official letter to the Libyan Football Association (LFF) on Tuesday, 7 October 2025.

The move signals stronger cooperation between the two footballing nations and represents a rare occurrence in African football.

Al-Merrikh, based in Omdurman, will now feature in both domestic and foreign competitions — a first for a Sudanese club.

Officials believe the opportunity will boost the club’s visibility, improve competition levels, and offer greater financial and commercial benefits.

The club assured supporters that its participation in the Libyan league will not affect its domestic campaign.

The Sudanese Premier League kicks off in January 2026, and Al-Merrikh plans to compete strongly on both fronts.

This decision also holds wider significance for African football. Few clubs on the continent have participated in two national leagues simultaneously.

Experts believe Al-Merrikh’s example could inspire future collaborations and open new pathways for regional club football.

Libyan officials have welcomed the move, viewing it as an opportunity to enhance the quality of their league and strengthen sporting ties with Sudan.

Fans in both countries are excited to witness new rivalries and high-level competition.

Al-Merrikh is now preparing for a demanding season, working on logistics and squad planning to handle the challenges of competing in two leagues.

The decision marks a bold step forward for the club and a milestone in African football cooperation.
