Al Kholood Chairman Asserts Salah Isnt Suited for Saudi League and Advocates for Vini Jr Acquisition
Uncertainty Surrounds Salah’s Future at Anfield
Mohamed Salah’s position at Liverpool is now under scrutiny following his open criticism of the club during a recent interview in which he expressed feeling “thrown under the bus” after being benched by manager Arne Slot.
Speculations of a Transfer Increase
The 33-year-old forward was omitted from the squad destined for a Champions League match against Inter, intensifying rumors about a possible move to the financially rewarding Saudi Pro League. Salah has been a target for several prominent Saudi clubs, with Liverpool previously rejecting a £150 million bid for the player in 2023.
Salah has previously indicated he engaged in “serious” discussions with Saudi officials prior to renewing his contract with Liverpool. Harburg, associated with Al Kholood—currently sitting 11th out of 18 in the Pro League—commented that Saudi clubs should tread carefully if considering another approach for the Egyptian star.
Concerns About Salah’s Fit
Harburg expressed that there seems to be a prevailing narrative suggesting that the aforementioned Saudi clubs previously sought Salah and were turned down, leading to hesitancy in revisiting their pursuit. He remarked at the World Football Summit in Riyadh, “They are not individuals who take rejection lightly and may be reluctant to try again.”
He further stated, “There is a growing concern within the public about him potentially joining the league. At 33 years old and having been well-compensated at Liverpool, his performance has significantly dipped.”
Despite being the Premier League’s leading scorer last season, Salah has only managed five goals and three assists across all competitions this term, with Liverpool currently struggling in 10th place in the league standings.
Preference for Younger Talents
Harburg led the discussion by contrasting Salah’s suitability with that of younger players, specifically mentioning Vinicius. “While some may appreciate his star status and regional ties, I personally believe he does not align with our league’s needs. If I had to choose between him and Vinicius, I would choose Vinicius.”
He continued by noting, “I believe Vinicius could excel in our environment. My hope is to target the next generation of players aged around 25 rather than pursuing veterans like Salah who are nearing the end of their careers.”
