Al Ahly Hires Ex-Bundesliga Coach for New Leadership Role

Al Ahly Hires Ex-Bundesliga Coach for New Leadership Role

Al Ahly Finalizes Appointment of Former Augsburg Coach

Egyptian football powerhouse Al Ahly has officially named Danish coach Jess Thorup as the new head of their coaching staff, replacing Jose Riveiro.

Thorough Search for Leadership

This decision follows a comprehensive search for a new head coach, which included numerous candidates being considered for the role.

  • Al Ahly initially reached out to ex-Portugal manager Fernando Santos, known for leading the Cristiano Ronaldo-led team to victory in the 2016 European Championship.

  • However, Santos declined the club’s overture, leading to an approach for Bruno Lage, who was recently let go from his position at Benfica.

  • Lage also turned down the opportunity after discussions on personal terms and contract specifics did not lead to an agreement.

Other Contenders

The coaching shortlist also featured other notable figures:

  • Miguel Cardoso (Current head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns)
  • Jose Gomes
  • Fatih Terim (Former Galatasaray manager)

Ultimately, it is Jess Thorup, the former coach of Augsburg, who has been chosen to lead the team in Cairo.

Contract Details

The 55-year-old, who has previously won two Danish championships and a Danish Cup, has signed a contract spanning two and a half years with the record 12-time champions of Africa.
