Afcon to transition to a quadrennial schedule starting in 2028
Patrice Motsepe, the president of the Confederation of African Football, has confirmed that the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) will be hosted every four years starting in 2028.
Traditionally, the tournament has been organized biannually since 1968, except for a one-year hiatus between the 2012 and 2013 tournaments.
The adjustment to a quadrennial format will commence after the 2027 Afcon, which will take place in East Africa.
In addition, Motsepe revealed plans for a new African Nations League that is set to occur annually beginning in 2029.
Motsepe remarked, “We are introducing an exciting new framework for African football.”
Further details to come.
