Players’ Representation and Nationality
As the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) approach, eleven athletes from the Bundesliga continue their journey. They are representing six out of the eight competing nations, with only Egypt and Nigeria not having any players currently active in the German league. Teams like Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Morocco, Senegal, and Mali are still in the tournament, with notable Bundesliga representation.
Path to the Quarter-Finals
Algeria, the champions of the previous 2019 edition, made their way through the last 16 by defeating Congo DR with a minimal score of 1-0 after extra time. Their next challenge is against Nigeria, who cruised through their group stage and secured a convincing 4-0 victory over Mozambique. Former Bundesliga stars Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen have each netted three goals in the tournament so far.
Individual Performances
Ibrahim Maza’s Contributions
Ibrahim Maza from Bayer Leverkusen has emerged as a key player for Algeria. He scored twice during the group stages and was named the player of the match in one of those encounters. In their last 16 showdown, he initiated the match alongside Mohamed Amoura in a 4-4-2 formation, managing two shots on target and creating a significant opportunity in the first half.
Fares Chaïbi’s Role
Fares Chaïbi from Eintracht Frankfurt has participated in all four of Algeria’s matches, starting three of them. He played a crucial role in the 2-0 victory against Equatorial Guinea, collaborating effectively with Maza, and later contributed defensively against Congo DR, making an impactful save that led to Adil Boulbina scoring the decisive goal late in the match.
Ramy Bensebaini’s Impact
Ramy Bensebaini of Borussia Dortmund has also made a substantial impact, starting three times for Algeria. The team only conceded a goal in the match he didn’t feature in. During the encounter against Congo DR, he was actively involved, winning 28 duels, having 99 touches, and successfully completing 84 percent of his 77 passes.
Mohammed Amoura’s Efforts
From Wolfsburg, Mohammed Amoura has provided one assist to Riyad Mahrez and has been active in creating scoring opportunities, with seven shots on target, albeit without finding the net himself. His energetic performance alongside Maza in the round of 16 was particularly highlighted.
